Rumors had been talking about a new lower-end iPhone for a while: the earliest ones date back to 2022, the same year that the third iteration of the iPhone SE came out. Despite its good value-for-money factor, the iPhone SE 3rd gen was very heavily criticized for once again keeping the iPhone 8-like design which felt far too dated for a 2022 phone, even considering its midrange position in the market. People wanted a bezel less iPhone without having to pay a premium for the flagships or settle for an older model and the iPhone SE 3rd gen was definitely not that. Apple knew this and finally, after almost three years of waiting, all these people were finally satisfied\u2026or maybe not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On february 19th 2025 Apple released the iPhone 16E, a lower-end version of the base iPhone 16. The design is a combination of the iPhone 13\u2019s display, the iPhone 16\u2019s chassis and a little throwback to the iPhone 4 on the back. Internally it sports the A18 chip (with one less GPU core) and the all new Apple made C1 modem, which keeps performance on par with the Qualcomm modems inside the rest of the iPhone 16 family but makes major steps forward in efficiency and power consumption, accomplishing great battery life (with the help of a bigger battery). The single camera on the back is the iPhone 16\u2019s main 48MP one but on the 16E it doesn\u2019t support new generation portraits and photographic styles and lacks sensor shift, opting for regular OIS. Same thing goes for the front facing 12MP camera with the additional lack of support for cinema mode in Dolby Vision.
Another very important feature missing from the iPhone 16E is magsafe, making it the first non-SE iPhone to not support it since its introduction with the iPhone 12 family almost 5 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what exactly is this iPhone? It\u2019s not a replacement or an upgrade for the iPhone SE 3rd gen because it doesn\u2019t take an older design and spec-bump it and it\u2019s not a 2025 version of the 2013 iPhone 5C because the iPhone 16E isn\u2019t last year\u2019s tech wrapped in a new shell. The iPhone 16E is something completely new created for those users that want to enjoy the latest and greatest processor speeds and features but don\u2019t need ProMotion, the dynamic island, more cameras and magsafe. It\u2019s an iPhone meant to be basic, a cheaper alternative for someone who wants to own an iPhone 16 but doesn\u2019t want to or can\u2019t afford to pay the higher price for the regular, Plus, Pro or Pro Max models. This explains why the 729\u20ac starting price isn\u2019t similar to the SE 3rd gen when it came out but it\u2019s 170\u20ac higher (it\u2019s important to note that the 16E starts at 128GB, the SE 3rd gen started at half the storage, considering the 128GB variants of both phones the difference is 70\u20ac less).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest reason why the iPhone 16E isn\u2019t well received by the tech community but also casual users is exactly this one: its price. Having understood that this iPhone is meant to be a more affordable version of the base 16, can it still be considered cheap if its price for the maxed-out version is over 1100\u20ac? You can get a 256GB iPhone 16 or a 128GB iPhone 16 Plus for only a few euros more, both of which are definitely better phones than the 16E; even a refurbished iPhone 15 pro would be a great option. The iPhone 16E isn\u2019t a bad phone at all; its problem is too little being offered (no wide-angle, no extra color options and especially no magsafe) for too much money and its confusing position in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are three ways the iPhone 16E could be a much better iPhone: keep everything as-is and lower the price to 550-600\u20ac, keep the entry price the same but add magsafe or completely rethink the entire device by creating something conceptually more similar to the previous SEs. A good way to do this would be to spec-bump an iPhone 13 or 14 with the same chip used in the 16E, add USB-C and the action button, switch the glossy back glass for the matte one and keep everything else the same. This way the price can be kept lower because almost all the components are from an already existing iPhone, the ultrawide camera and magsafe are still included and you get all the improvements that USB-C and the A18 chip bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the iPhone 16E could\u2019ve been the biggest upgrade to the SE line ever (comparing the 16E and the SE 3rd gen the improvements are HUGE!) and generally an incredible iPhone but its unexplainable shortcomings and most importantly its price unfortunately hold it back. When the new iPhones will come out in september and the price will come down, it\u2019s gonna be a different, better, story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Da un po\u2019 di tempo i rumor ventilavano l\u2019uscita di un nuovo iPhone di fascia pi\u00f9 bassa: i pi\u00f9 datati risalgono al 2022, anno in cui \u00e8 uscita la terza generazione dell\u2019iPhone SE. Nonostante il buon rapporto qualit\u00e0-prezzo, l\u2019iPhone SE 3 \u00e8 stato ampiamente criticato per aver mantenuto ancora una volta il design dell\u2019iPhone 8 che sembrava fin troppo datato per un telefono del 2022, anche considerando la sua posizione da medio gamma sul mercato. La gente voleva un iPhone tutto schermo senza dover pagare un costo in pi\u00f9 per i top di gamma o accontentarsi di un modello pi\u00f9 vecchio e l\u2019iPhone SE 3 certamente non era questo. Apple ne era bene a conoscenza e finalmente, dopo quasi tre anni di attesa, tutte queste persone sono state finalmente soddisfatte\u2026
o forse non cos\u00ec tanto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il 19 febbraio 2025 Apple ha presentato l\u2019iPhone 16E, una versione di fascia pi\u00f9 bassa dell\u2019iPhone 16 base. Il design \u00e8 una combinazione del display dell\u2019iPhone 13, del telaio dell\u2019iPhone 16 e un piccolo ritorno all’iPhone 4 sul retro. Internamente \u00e8 dotato del chip A18 (con un core GPU in meno) e il nuovissimo modem C1 fatto da Apple, che mantiene le prestazioni alla pari con i modem Qualcomm all’interno del resto della famiglia iPhone 16 ma fa grandi passi avanti nell\u2019efficienza e nel consumo energetico, raggiungendo un\u2019ottima durata della batteria (con l’aiuto di una batteria pi\u00f9 grande). La fotocamera singola sul retro \u00e8 quella principale da 48MP dell’iPhone 16, ma sul 16E non supporta i ritratti di nuova generazione e gli stili fotografici e manca la stabilizzazione ottica su sensore, optando per la classica OIS. Lo stesso vale per la fotocamera frontale da 12MP con l’ulteriore mancanza di supporto per la modalit\u00e0 cinema in Dolby Vision.
Un\u2019altra caratteristica molto importante assente nell’iPhone 16E \u00e8 il magsafe, che lo rende il primo iPhone non-SE a non supportarlo dalla sua introduzione con la famiglia di iPhone 12 quasi 5 anni fa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quindi, che cos\u2019\u00e8 esattamente questo iPhone? Non \u00e8 un sostituto o un aggiornamento dell’iPhone SE 3 perch\u00e9 non prende un vecchio design ma aggiorna le componentistiche interne e non \u00e8 una versione moderna dell\u2019iPhone 5C del 2013 perch\u00e9 l\u2019iPhone 16E non \u00e8 la tecnologia dello scorso anno racchiusa in un nuovo involucro. L’iPhone 16E \u00e8 qualcosa di completamente nuovo creato per quegli utenti che vogliono godere delle funzioni pi\u00f9 recenti e velocit\u00e0 migliori ma non hanno bisogno del ProMotion, dell’isola dinamica, di pi\u00f9 telecamere e del magsafe. \u00c8 un iPhone pensato per essere basico, un’alternativa pi\u00f9 economica per qualcuno che vuole possedere un iPhone 16 ma non vuole o non pu\u00f2 permettersi di pagare il prezzo pi\u00f9 alto per i modelli regolari, Plus, Pro o Pro Max. Questo spiega perch\u00e9 il prezzo di partenza di 729\u20ac non \u00e8 simile a quello dell\u2019SE 3 quando \u00e8 uscito ma \u00e8 170\u20ac pi\u00f9 alto (\u00e8 importante notare che il 16E parte da 128GB, l\u2019SE 3 partiva a met\u00e0 della memoria, considerando le varianti da 128GB di entrambi i telefoni la differenza \u00e8 70\u20ac in meno).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il motivo principale per cui l’iPhone 16E non \u00e8 molto apprezzato dagli appassionati di tecnologia ma anche dagli utenti occasionali \u00e8 proprio questo: il suo prezzo. Appurato che questo iPhone \u00e8 stato concepito come una versione pi\u00f9 conveniente del 16 base, pu\u00f2 ancora essere considerato economico se il suo prezzo per la versione pi\u00f9 costosa \u00e8 superiore a 1100\u20ac? Si pu\u00f2 avere un iPhone 16 da 256GB o un iPhone 16 Plus da 128GB per solo pochi euro in pi\u00f9, entrambi decisamente telefoni migliori del 16E; anche un iPhone 15 Pro ricondizionato sarebbe un\u2019ottima opzione. L’iPhone 16E non \u00e8 affatto un brutto telefono; il suo problema \u00e8 troppa poca offerta (niente grandangolo, niente colori extra e soprattutto niente magsafe) per troppi soldi e la sua posizione confusionaria nel mercato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci sono tre modi in cui l’iPhone 16E potrebbe essere un iPhone molto migliore: mantenere tutto cos\u00ec com’\u00e8 e abbassare il prezzo a 550-600\u20ac, mantenere lo stesso prezzo di partenza ma aggiungere il magsafe o ripensare completamente l’intero dispositivo creando qualcosa concettualmente pi\u00f9 simile ai precedenti SE. Un buon modo per farlo sarebbe quello di aggiornare un iPhone 13 o 14 con lo stesso chip utilizzato nel 16E, aggiungere il connettore USB-C e il tasto azione, sostituire il vetro posteriore lucido con quello opaco e mantenere tutto il resto identico. In questo modo il prezzo pu\u00f2 essere mantenuto basso perch\u00e9 quasi tutti i componenti provengono da un iPhone gi\u00e0 esistente, la fotocamera ultrawide e il magsafe sono ancora inclusi e si ottengono tutti i miglioramenti che l\u2019ingresso USB-C e il chip A18 portano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusione, l\u2019iPhone 16E sarebbe potuto essere il pi\u00f9 grande aggiornamento della linea SE in assoluto (confrontando il 16E e la terza generazione SE i miglioramenti sono enormi!) e pi\u00f9 in generale un iPhone incredible ma le sue inspiegabili carenze e soprattutto il suo prezzo purtroppo lo limitano. Quando a settembre usciranno i nuovi iPhone e il prezzo scender\u00e0, sar\u00e0 una storia diversa e migliore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
